People think that they are not like others they think before they speak. But most of the time they are wrong. It’s the human psychology that has been developed over thousands of years. You can’t just resist it.

Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

1. Sometimes not saying anything is the best answer, silence can never be misquoted.

2. Wait 5 or 10 seconds before responding. This gives you time to formulate a): whether a response is required, and b): an appropriate and thoughtful response.

3. One of the best way is to observe. Observe the conversation, the environment, the people, and situation. Then formulate the right answer, consider the information you are going to communicate, know when to speak.  And then communicate.

5. To remind yourself to think before saying something, pinch yourself on the finger or somewhere discrete (gently, but just enough to get yourself on track).

If you develop a routine for answering a question, you will be less likely to say the first thing that comes to mind.

When you say something you shouldn’t have, and if it was something hurtful, Apologize immediately.
